Angela Lee Duckworth: The key to success? Grit

Angela Lee Duckworth was a teacher when she was 27 years old. She taught math in a public school in New York. During that period, she tried to understand learning progress among her students. She found out that IQ was not the only determinant of student learning. In other words, the most excellent kids in her class does not necessary the kids having the highest IQ. Her observation led her to pursue a psychology degree in graduate school. She and her research team dedicated their efforts to find out what is the key factor of predicting whether a person would be success or not. For example, they went to West Point and tried to predict who would pass military training and who would give up. Their research result showed that the key predictor is grit. The other characteristics are not that important, such as social intelligence, good looks, family income and IQ.

How to build grit in kids? She believed that growth mindset is helpful. People possessing growth mindset believes that the ability to learn is not fixed. They can change with effort. Those who have this mindset are more willing to take up challenges. Failures make they become stronger. Therefore, they are more easily to achieve the "success" by their own definition. Angela hopes that we can take advantage of growth mindset, then we would more likely to persevere when we are fail and start over again with lessons learned.
