Gever Tulley: 5 dangerous things you should let your kids do

In this talk, the speaker, Gever Tulley, explained to us how to help kids prepare for the real world. Nowadays, almost everything has been produced under strict child safety regulations. Even golf ball has been marked with a warning label indicating a sharp object for those who under age 10. Gever argued that if we are always protecting from those stuff, how are they going to handle it and learn life lessons by themselves? From the speaker's perspective, being able to explore and learn things is what defines kids to be independent when they grow up. He then listed five major things which he thinks could raise kids to be creative, confident and in control of the environment around us.
The first thing is "Playing with fire". Fire is one of the great things we ever discovered from mother nature throughout the entire human history. When kids play with fire, they can learn the basic principle and know how dangerous it really is. Number two is learning how to use a pocket knife. It is an universal tool, kids should learn how to use it even though they might cut themselves. Number three is throwing a spear. Although this is something we generally think we should tell a kid not to do, Gever thinks in different ways. He explained that part of our brain is designed to throw things. Throwing things actually help kids gain three dimensional understanding and structural problem solving skill. This activity also could help kids to develop their attention and concentration skills. The fourth thing is deconstructing appliances that are not going to be used again. Even kids do not know what deconstructed part is for, they still can have a better understanding of how things generally work. The last thing mentioned by Gever is driving a car with kids. For those of who are not comfortable of breaking the law. The speaker suggested that they can try to drive a car in a big empty parking lot. It is actually safe and fun.
