Meg Jay: Why 30 is not the new 20

Meg Jay is a clinical psychologist. In her TED talk, "Why 30 is not the new 20", she explained to us the fact that 80 percent of our life's most defining moments happen by age 35. The speaker suggested that the first 10 years of people's career have an extraordinary impact on how much money they will earn later. Also, people's personality changes more during their 20s than at any other period in their life. In contrast, the general idea of people is that they have 10 more years to figure their lives out when they are in twentysomethings. This, from the speaker's perspective, is robbing a person of his urgency and ambition. Throughout her talk, Meg explained her perspective through referring to some of her patients. To conclude, she suggested that we should do below three key lessons when you are in twentysomethings. 1. Get some identity capital. Do something that adds value to who you are. 2. Use weak ties. Our close circle of friends and family members are good at supporting us. However, if we only stick with them, because of their similarities, we would limit to who they know, what they know, how they think, etc... New and good things come from new people, which is outside of the inner circle and comfort zone. The last thing is picking up your family. The best time of picking family is now.
