Monica Lewinsky was a former White House intern. She was known by the public because of she fall in love with former US president Bill Clinton. She then learned the devastating consequences from the infamous affair, an affair which make she regretted deeply.
Lewinsky said "Remember, just few years earlier, news was consumed from just three places, reading a newspaper or magazine, listening to the radio, or watching television".But this was not her fate, instead, she went from being a private citizen to a publicly humiliated person overnight.
Lewinsky said "Remember, just few years earlier, news was consumed from just three places, reading a newspaper or magazine, listening to the radio, or watching television".But this was not her fate, instead, she went from being a private citizen to a publicly humiliated person overnight.
Lewinsky believes that she was the "Patient Zero" of the type of internet shaming, resulting in her personal reputation was destroyed completely on global scale almost instantaneously.Lewinsky said, she gradually realized there were two Monica Lewinsky. One is real Monica Lewinsky the other one is Monica Lewinsky created by public. She said "I was seen by many but actually known by few".
Many years later, she had gradually stepped out from the scandal. The compassion and empathy from her family, friends or even strangers helped her to conquer these dark days. Now she is hoping to help victims of Internet shaming. In 2010, a college freshman Tyler Clementi committed suicide after being recorded by his roommate when he was intimate with a man. Lewinsky believes that the trend of being humiliated to death online has only continued and no one is immune. She said "Public humiliation is a commodity, shame is an industry". With every clicks we have a choice, the more clicks on those gossips, someone is making advertisement dollars while someone is suffering. To save our society from this dangerous cycle, Lewinsky suggests that empathy is the key. After all, shame cannot survive empathy.
My opinion
Internet is a double-edged sword. We all know very well about the advantageous of internet. But there are downside as well. Maybe internet giants like Google or Facebook can help to establish a system which simply parsed the context of every posts and show an indication to user. For example, a "hurt index" which shows whether this post is painful for someone or not. Consider privacy issue, user should be able to disable this feature but it is enabled by default.
